Storm Spotter Training

Posted on Wednesday January 11, 2023

After a couple year hiatus the National Weather Service (NWS) is now hosting Storm Spotter Training Sessions in-person and a local event will be held on February 8th at 7:00 pm at Vernon Hills High School.  The Storm Spotter Training is free and open to the public and goes over the basics of storm spotting, thunderstorms, and methods to report severe weather.  Additional information is on their website 2023 NWS Chicago Storm Spotting Training Schedule (weather.gov) but from their website here are a few key points:

  • All sessions last about 2 hours.
  • They are free and open to the public.
  • Classes are appropriate for all ages. Ages 10 and up will likely get the most out of the training.
  • Pre-registration is required to access virtual sessions and certain in-person sessions, but no pre-registration is needed for the Vernon Hills event.  If you do go to their website and click on the event there is a nice feature to add the event directly to your calendar.
  • You may attend a class offered by any NWS office, regardless of where you live.

As mentioned, this event is free to the public so please feel free to spread the word.  A special thanks to District 128 for their support and specifically to Diane Phillips who has been instrumental in coordinating this event multiple times over the years.  NWS plans to do these every-other-year in a County they visit, so please take advantage of this opportunity as it may not be available again in Lake County until 2025.
